Harvesting and storage: Harvest the stem and branch in autumn, remove the leaves, wash and dry in the sun.
Original form: Berberis anhweiensis, deciduous shrub, 1-2m high. branchlets slightly angular, old branches yellow or dark brown, with a few black warts, spines solitary or 3-forked, 1.5-3cm long. leaves clustered; stalk 0.5-1cm long; leaf blade elliptic, obovate thrifty to ovate-elliptic, 2-6cm long, 1.5-3.5cm wide, apex rounded, base cuneate, margin with spiny serrations 15-25, teeth 2-3mm apart. 25, teeth 2-3mm apart, green above, grayish white below, reticulate veins obvious. Racemes terminal, 3-4 cm long, with 10-20 flowers; flowers yellow, about 1 cm in diameter, perianth 6, with 2 glands at the base of inner petal whorl; stamens 6, anthers 2-valved; ovary 1, containing 1-2 ovules. Berry ellipsoid, red, slightly powdery. Apr-Jul, fr. Aug-Oct.
Habitat distribution: Ecological environment: Born at 400 m above sea level in mountain thickets, by streams or between stone gaps in the forest.
Resource distribution: Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and other places.
Characteristics: Characteristic identification, stem branches cylindrical, slightly straight, multi-branched, 1-5mm in diameter, varying in length. Surface black-brown purchase or brown-black, with longitudinal wrinkles, needles more single, sparse trident. Hard, easy to break, fracture surface fiber wai; cross-section pale yellow skin, yellow wood, with dense radial texture, pith is smaller, yellow-white. Slight odor, bitter taste.
Stem and branch thick, yellow color on the broken surface is better.
Microscopic identification, stem cross-section: cork layer is more than 10 rows of cork cells, closely arranged. The cortex is narrow; fibers are scattered individually, thin-walled. Vascular bundle outer tough type, 20-28 circular rows; bast narrower; bundle in the formation layer of 2-3 rows of cells; xylem developed, duct diameter up to 50μm, wood fibers numerous, closely arranged. The rays are relatively straight, with 1-7 rows of cells wide. Pith about 1/4 of the diameter, composed of thin-walled cells, some cells contain calcium oxalate columnar crystals or square crystals.
Taste: bitter; cold in nature.
Induction: Liver; Stomach; Large intestine meridian.
Functions: Clearing heat and drying dampness; removing fire and detoxifying. Damp-heat dysentery; diarrhea; jaundice; gonorrhea; dysbiosis; sores; sore throat; red eyes and swelling pain.
Usage and dosage: For internal use: decoction, 10-15 g. For external use: decoction and fumigation.
