Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hubei Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, affiliated hospital of Hubei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) was founded in 1868 (the seventh year of Tongzhi in Qing Dynasty), formerly known as Renji Hospital founded by British missionary Yang Gefei. In the past 140 years, through the hard work of several generations, it has developed into a large comprehensive provincial-level Chinese medicine hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, with complete disciplines and outstanding Chinese medicine characteristics. It is one of the first model Chinese medicine hospitals in China, a Grade A Chinese medicine hospital, a national clinical research base for Chinese medicine, a national standardized training base for Chinese medicine residents and a standardized training base for general practitioners in Chinese medicine, a national drug testing institute, and the best civilized unit in Hubei Province. The hospital has a group of experts and strong technical force. There are 383 professional and technical personnel with titles above associate high, 18 doctoral supervisors and 120 master’s supervisors; 12 doctoral and 23 master’s programs. There are 27 national famous old Chinese medicine doctors, 6 Hubei Chinese medicine masters, 12 Hubei Chinese medicine masters, 21 national outstanding Chinese medicine clinical training talents, and 1 leading medical talent in Hubei Province.

The hospital has opened 36 clinical and medical-technical departments and formed a number of key specialist groups with distinctive TCM characteristics and remarkable therapeutic effects. Among them, there are 5 key specialties of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, 9 key specialties of the National TCM Administration, 6 key disciplines of the National TCM Administration, 12 provincial key specialties and 6 provincial key disciplines.
The hospital has always been committed to inheriting and carrying forward the essence of Chinese medicine, taking the lead in the country to carry out “winter and summer treatment”, “cream festival” and other Chinese medicine special services, with 10 national famous old Chinese medicine experts inheritance studio, national academic school of Chinese medicine inheritance studio 1 There are 10 national-level famous old Chinese medicine experts inheritance workshops, 1 national-level Chinese medicine academic school inheritance workshop, 1 national-level Chinese medicine key research laboratory and 1 scientific research laboratory of the State Administration of Chinese Medicine, and 14 secondary laboratories. It has developed 105 varieties of Chinese medicine preparations.
The hospital attaches importance to science and education work. Every year, it undertakes more than 20,000 hours of classroom teaching in Hubei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has presided over or participated in major scientific and technological research projects from the Sixth Five-Year Plan to the Tenth Five-Year Plan of China, the 973 and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The Center has hosted or participated in more than 400 research projects at ministerial and provincial levels, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects. The Medical Laboratory Center has passed the ISO15189 medical laboratory standard accreditation, and the test results are mutually recognized internationally. The hospital has conducted extensive exchanges and cooperation with 25 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, Singapore and Taiwan.
The hospital has strengthened its health support to agriculture through the establishment of medical consortia, large-scale charity clinics, aid to Xinjiang and Tibet, AIDS prevention and control and other forms of activities, and earnestly implemented central and provincial counterpart support projects. The hospital’s doctoral group went deep into the Dabie Mountains, the Wuling Mountains and the Jianghan Plain to carry out touring medical activities, which were warmly welcomed by local patients.
